Zelensky: Around 2,200 Russian soldiers captured in eastern Ukraine in 2025

This year, 2,200 Russian servicemen have been taken prisoner in eastern Ukraine. During the Dobropillia operation conducted by Ukraine’s Defense Forces, Russian troops suffered significant losses.

President Volodymyr Zelensky stated this while speaking with journalists, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.

“Putin needed Dobropillia. And our forces acted correctly. We do not know what the Russians would have done if we had not carried out the Dobropillia operation. They ‘wiped out’ many of their own troops there. Around 2,200 of their soldiers have been taken prisoner this year. The entire east — Dobropillia, Pokrovsk — brought in 2,200 Russian prisoners. Imagine how many they have lost,” Zelensky said.

He also noted that since Russia is redeploying all its forces to the Pokrovsk front, their plans to advance, including in Sumy region, are unfeasible.

“In Sumy region they have no forces. Bit by bit, they will move everything to Pokrovsk,” the Ukrainian President said, emphasizing that Pokrovsk remains the main target of the invaders.

As previously reported, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, total Russian combat losses since the start of the full-scale invasion on 24 February 2022 until 28 October 2025 amount to approximately 1,137,850 personnel.
