Drones strike key Russian military factory, halting missile component production

In Yelets, a town in Russia’s Lipetsk region, drones targeted the Energia plant, which manufactures critical components for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), Iskander and Kinzhal missiles, and electronic warfare systems.

According Ukrinform, Andrii Kovalenko, Head of the Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD) under Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, reported this on Telegram.

Kovalenko stated that the Energia plant produces batteries and accumulators for UAVs, aviation, naval fleets, and radio systems, lithium-ion and mercury-zinc elements used in communications, command systems, electronic warfare, and training simulators for tanks and missile systems, electrochemical capacitors serving the needs of the Russian Ministry of Defense

Additionally, the plant specializes in manufacturing photo-optical power units that provide autonomous energy supply without the need for power lines.

Kovalenko emphasized that Energia is a supplier to the Russian Ministry of Defense, as well as other state structures including Roscosmos, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the FSB, the Ministry of Emergency Situations, and Gazprom.

The plant’s products are actively used in communication and control systems, electronic warfare, drone technologies, production of Iskander and Kinzhal missiles

Energia is under international sanctions imposed by the EU, U.S., Japan, and other countries due to its military relevance. However, the factory had continued operations until now. Following the drone attack, the plant has halted its work, Kovalenko reported.

As previously reported, drones targeted the Bolkhov Semiconductor Devices Plant in Russia’s Oryol region, which produces microchips and components used in Russian weaponry.
