Putin signs decree on military conscription - largest in last four years

"From April 1 to July 15, 2025, conscription for military service shall be carried out of citizens of the Russian Federation aged 18 to 30 who are not in the reserve and who are subject to conscription for military service, in the amount of 160,000 people," the decree says.

Last year, the spring conscription extended to 150,000 people, in 2023 – to 147,000, and in 2022 – to 134,500.

The change is associated with the implementation of Putin's decrees on a gradual increase in the Russian army size

In early 2022, there were about 1 million servicemen on active duty in Russia. Over the course of three years, the size of the Russian regular army was increased to 1.5 million.

The conscription age ceiling was raised last year from 27 to 30 years. The lower limit, despite the initial promises by the Russian authorities to also raise it, remained unchanged, at 18 years.

As Ukrinform reported, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin signed a decree on September 30 to call up 133,000 people for military service in the Russian army in October-December 2024.
