The United Nations has condemned Russia’s “heinous” missile strike targeting the central part of Chernihiv, a regional center located northeast of Kyiv.

That’s according to the UN press service, Ukrinform reports.

“I am extremely disturbed by the news of yet another Russian strike that hit shortly ago the heart of Chernihiv, in northern Ukraine, leaving dozens of civilians killed and injured, including children,” said Denise Brown, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Ukraine.

“It is heinous to attack the main square of a large city, in the morning, while people are out walking, some going to the church to celebrate a religious day for many Ukrainians,” the official stressed.

She went on to “condemn this repeated pattern of Russian strikes on populated areas of Ukraine, causing deaths, massive destruction and soaring humanitarian needs.”

Attacks directed against civilians or civilian objects are strictly prohibited under international humanitarian law, she recalled.

“It must stop,” Denise Brown concluded.

As Ukrinform reported earlier, on the morning of Saturday, August 19, Russian forces launched a missile strike on Chernihiv. The missile struck the city’s main square.

The strike killed seven people and injured another 117, according to the latest update.
