In the Rivne region, the Security Service of Ukraine exposed a KGB agent of the Republic of Belarus who was spying on the northern border of Ukraine.

The SBU reported this on Telegram, according to Ukrinform.

The informant was a citizen of Belarus who has a permanent residence permit in Ukraine and has been living in the Rivne region for a long time.

"At the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Russia, he was recruited by a Belarusian KGB officer and carried out reconnaissance and subversive activities against Ukraine. The agent's task was to collect data on the defence of the northern borders of our country and the routes of military equipment," the statement said.

SBU officers detained the enemy accomplice at his place of residence during another attempt to transfer intelligence to the Republic of Belarus.

"It has been established that he came to the attention of the Belarusian KGB as a former commander of a unit of the Soviet Union's airborne assault troops. At that time, he took an active part in hostilities in Afghanistan," the SBU said.

To carry out reconnaissance missions in the Rivne region, he was patrolling the border area and observing the movement of the Defence Forces.

Based on the collected evidence, the detainee was served a notice of suspicion.
