Ukrainian troops have recaptured about 20 square kilometers of territory back from Russia around the eastern city of Bakhmut in recent days, with heavy fighting going on in the city.

Ukraine's Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar announced this on Telegram, according to Ukrinform.

She noted that information about the course of hostilities should be considered through the prism of all measures of the defensive operation and should not be taken out of the context of the events.

"For example, in the past few days, our troops liberated about 20 square kilometers from the enemy in the north and south of the suburbs of Bakhmut," Maliar said.

She also added that the Russian army was making some gains in Bakhmut itself, completely destroying the city with artillery. In addition, the enemy is pulling units of professional paratroopers. "Heavy battles are going on with different results. In the current situation, our troops are doing their best and even more," she said.

Maliar also added: "The fact that the defense of Bakhmut has lasted for so many months and there are gains in certain areas is due to extraordinary efforts by our fighters and the high level of professionalism of the defense command."

She also recalled that the enemy has an advantage in the number of personnel and weapons. At the same time, thanks to the actions of the Ukrainian military, enemy forces have not been able to implement their plans in the Bakhmut area since last summer.
