Counterintelligence agencies operating in Ukraine ensure the security of the country’s top political and military leadership.

That’s according to a spokesman for the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense (GUR), Andriy Yusov, who spoke at the national telethon, answering a question about the recent allegations claiming the U.S. could be spying on Ukrainian leaders’ communications.

In the wake of the latest leak of what is purported to be a trove of classified Pentagon documents, Yusov expressed the opinion that Ukraine, as a sovereign and independent state, should certainly treat any such reports seriously.

"Also, we have counter-intelligence agencies that are responsible for this area and, of course, they ensure the safety of our top officials, our military-political leadership," he clarified.

Commenting on the issue of the possible leak of American intelligence documents and the row that ensued over it, Yusov noted that it isn’t news for the GUR that the Russians are trying to get hold of sensitive information and conduct special psyops, so that certain data are used against Ukraine’s national interests.

"In this situation, the whole world has faced this and this, I believe, is a serious sign that Russia is incurable as an aggressor. And, of course, the Putin regime is a potentially terrorist regime in general in relation to global security, not just a single nation. That is, the threat posed by the Russian Federation is coming, as we see here, at South Korea, the U.S., and many other countries that have found themselves at the epicenter of this story," he said.

The GUR spokesman clarified that this “leak” is obviously being exploited today by Russia’s propagandists and agents of influence in the Kremlin’s interests, with the aim of weakening the support for Ukraine on the part of the free world. The official is convinced, however, that the Russians “certainly won’t succeed” in this regard.

As Ukrinform reported earlier, referring to the representatives from the U.S. administration, the investigation into the leak of documents from the U.S. Department of Defense, which contained classified information, may last several months.

According to Deputy Minister of Defense Hanna Maliar of Ukraine, the risks of data leakage regarding combat plans developed by Ukraine are currently minimal.
