Rheinmetall in talks with Kyiv on supply of Panther tanks

Germany's arms manufacturer Rheinmetall is negotiating with Kyiv on the supply of its most modern tanks and does not rule out the possibility of creating a plant for their production in Ukraine.

The group's CEO, Armin Papperger, told this to the Handelsblatt business news site, according to Ukrinform.

"We are in talks with Kyiv about the export of the Panther," Papperger said.

He noted that Ukraine had also expressed interest in the new Lynx infantry fighting vehicle. According to him, the Lynx and the Panther are currently "the most advanced armored personnel carriers and main battle tanks."

Currently, there is only a demonstration model of the Panther tank. However, Papperger promises deliveries "in 15 to 18 months."

The tanks could be produced in Germany or in Hungary, he said.

At the same time, Papperger did not rule out the possibility of setting up production in Ukraine in the future.

"We are ready to set up a Panther production plant in Ukraine as well," Papperger said, clarifying that this would be possible after the war ends and the necessary permits are obtained from the federal government.

Federal government approval is a necessary procedure. Papperger estimated the chances of obtaining a permit as good. "Ukraine must hold out this war - and when it ends, the country needs security," he said.

Rheinmetall unveiled the Panther at an exhibition in Paris last summer and touted it as the world's most powerful battle tank. If the decision is approved, Ukraine will become the first customer.
