Germany launches tests of new Ukraine-bound howitzers - media

The modern artillery installation RCH155 by Krauss-Maffei Wegmann is a next-generation howitzer. The self-propelled howitzer fires 155 mm shells like the Panzerhaubitze 2000, but is based on the Boxer vehicle, which an 8-wheeler that can reach speeds of over 100 kmh (unlike the tracked Panzerhaubitze 2000). The new unit has huge advantages, first of all, the ability to fire while moving, which makes it difficult to target and hit. It fires nine projectiles per minute at a range of 40 to 50 kilometers, and even more, depending on the type of ammunition used.

"With the Panzerhaubitze 2000, the military has always relied on the 'shoot and run' strategy," the publication notes.

The RCH155 is manned by two servicemen in contrast to a Panzerhaubitze 2000’s five-strong crew.

Panzerhaubitze 2000 is already one of the most powerful artillery weapons in the world, used by the Bundeswehr since 1998. Germany, together with the Netherlands, has already delivered 14 units of such self-propelled guns to Ukraine.

Back in July 2022, Ukraine asked Berlin to send in a modern howitzer. In December, the German government approved the sale. This makes Ukraine the first customer of one of the most modern German weapons. The publication writes that the contract is worth nearly EUR 216 million, which will be financed by the Federal Fund for Assistance to Ukraine.

Berlin plans to supply Ukraine with 18 RCH155s. However, this seems like a slow prospect. Experts say it will take 30 months to complete the delivery.

It should be recalled that it was Ukraine that also became the first "user" of the Iris T air defense system, which is still not in service with the Bundeswehr.
