IAEA frustrated by slow progress on protection zone for Zaporizhzhia NPP
According to an Ukrinform correspondent, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said this at an event hosted by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, CNN reports.
He said he was "very frustrated." "For me, establishing a protection zone around a nuclear power plant is as self-evident as anything can be. How can you shell a nuclear power plant for God's sake?" Grossi said.
He added that the detention by the Russian occupiers of two staff members of the ZNPP causes "great concern."
As reported, ZNPP, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, has been captured by the Russian military since March 4. The invaders placed military equipment and ammunition at the station, shelling the nearby area and the station itself, destroying power lines, causing a shutdown of power units and blaming the Ukrainian Armed Forces for this.
In addition, the invaders are kidnapping and torturing plant workers. On October 10, the Russians kidnapped Valerii Martyniuk, deputy general director of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. On September 30, they abducted the plant's director general, Ihor Murashov. The latter was released from captivity on October 3.
On October 17, the Russians detained Oleh Kostiukov, head of the station's information technology service, and Oleh Osheka, the station's assistant director general, and drove them away.
