On Day of Remembrance of the Defenders of Ukraine, fallen in the struggle for Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky presented the Golden Star Orders to the families of the Ukrainian servicemen, who had been awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine posthumously.

The solemn ceremony took place in the White Hall of Heroes of Ukraine at the Mariinskyi Palace, an Ukrinform correspondent reports, referring to the Office of the President of Ukraine.

“Since 2014, our state has been resisting the Russian aggression. Since February 24, out state has been fighting Russia’s full-scale terror against Ukraine. Thousands of heroic Ukrainians have laid down their lives, so that the enemy would not destroy our people, our freedom, our past, present and future,” Zelensky told.

The President of Ukraine promised the state would remember each of its defenders, and their heroism will forever remain in the history of the Ukrainian people and the state of Ukraine.

“We will do everything to make the story of each soldier known to all Ukrainians, all Europeans, and all over the world. People should appreciate what our defenders have done and are doing now. It is necessary to remember and respect this,” Zelensky noted.

The participants held a moment of silence for those who had laid down their lives for Ukraine.

The President of Ukraine presented the Golden Star Order to the wife and children of the fallen Hero of Ukraine, Lieutenant Colonel Dmytro Vasyliev. Since the first minutes of the war, he had competently led the missile division, which effectively struck an enemy column near Chonhar. As a result, up to 100 Russian military equipment units and troops were destroyed. Between February 24, 2022 and March 18, 2022, the missile division led by Dmytro Vasyliev struck enemy clusters near such settlements as Vasylivka, Tokmak, Melitopol, Polohy, Huliaipole, Kamianka, Dniprorudne, Berdiansk, Velyka Bilozirka. On March 18, 2022, Dmytro Vasyliev came under enemy fire in Zaporizhzhia Region and died from serious injuries the following day.

President Zelensky also presented the Golden Star Order to the family of Sergeant Andrii Ivashko, who was killed in Russia’s missile strike on the separate radar company in the city of Hlukhiv on February 24, 2022. Being on combat duty, he delivered combat information on enemy actions at the cost of his own life.

The title of Hero of Ukraine was awarded posthumously to Commander of the Aviation Unit of the Aviation Squadron of the 229th Tactical Aviation Brigade of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Captain Serhii Parkhomenko. He repeatedly demonstrated his flying skills, launching air strikes on enemy columns under challenging conditions. On May 14, 2022, when completing a combat mission, Serhii Parkhomenko was shot down near Huliaipole. The award was presented to his family.

The Golden Star Order was also received by the wife of Sergeant Major Andrii Khanin, who destroyed an enemy T-72 tank and about 10 Russian troops during military clashes in Volnovakha, Donetsk Region, on February 26, 2022. Andrii Khanin was wounded but managed to provide medical aid to himself and his comrades-in-arms. Andrii Khanin was killed in action, attempting to destroy an enemy infantry fighting vehicle.

The President of Ukraine also handed over the Golden Star Orders to the families of the fallen Heroes of Ukraine, Master Sergeant Vladyslav Buvalkin and Master Sergeant Oleksandr Makarenko. On March 20, 2022, as part of a group of the special unit of the Security Service of Ukraine, in cooperation with the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Vladyslav Buvalkin and Oleksandr Makarenko inflicted fire damage to enemy troops and a potential location of the enemy headquarters near Makariv, Kyiv Region.
