Ukrainian diplomats should do all to strengthen EU's seventh sanctions package - president

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that Ukrainian diplomats should do everything possible to strengthen the EU's seventh round of sanctions, which should be a fair response to Russia's terror.

He said this in his video address, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.

"Today, the European Union announced the first details of the new, seventh sanctions package being prepared against the Russian Federation, and the task of Ukrainian diplomats is to do everything to strengthen this package," Zelensky said.

According to him, after a missile strike on Vinnytsia and other terrorist attacks by the Russian army, the occupiers must feel what a fair response to terror means, including thanks to sanctions.

"Of course, the Armed Forces of Ukraine will certainly provide their part of the answer. The occupiers will have no restful nights," Zelensky said.

The European Commission on Friday announced its proposal for a seventh package of sanctions against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine. The proposed measures target gold and extend the ban on the export of technology to Russia.

This package will combine EU sanctions with similar measures by the EU's G7 partners. It will also strengthen reporting requirements to introduce tighter control over compliance with the EU-imposed freeze of the assets of individuals and entities included in the sanctions list.

The European Commission also proposes extending the current EU sanctions for a further six months, until their next review at the end of January 2023.
