Child missing after Russia’s shelling of evacuation column found dead in Kharkiv Region

In Kharkiv Region, the police have found a body of a 13-year-old girl, who went missing after Russian troops opened fire on an evacuation column of cars near the urban-type settlement of Staryi Saltiv on May 4, 2022.

The relevant statement was made by Head of Criminal Investigations Division at Kharkiv Regional Police Department Serhii Bolvinov on Facebook, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

According to Bolvinov, connection with people driving 15 cars towards Kharkiv as part of an evacuation column was lost on May 4, 2022. Law enforcement officers were unable to get to the scene immediately due to active hostilities. The evacuation column was located on May 6, 2022.

At the scene, the investigation team found a destroyed enemy tank, and two burnt bodies with the remains of Russian military uniform 150 meters away from it. Six cars with bullet holes and debris were found 300 meters away from that place. There were four bodies in these cars, presumably of those who were members of the evacuation column. At the moment, it is impossible to identify all bodies due to their condition.

“As for the girl who had been searched for via the social media, Sofia. Sadly, the remains of the body and a pendant that her relatives were referring to were found in the car she had been driving in,” Bolvinov noted.

A reminder that, on May 4, 2022, Russian troops opened fire on an evacuation column of cars, driving from Vovchansk. According to Advisor to Kharkiv Regional Council Head, volunteer Nataliia Popova, Sofia was in a car together with her 6-month-old sister and their mother. The woman was seriously injured and taken to hospital in Vovchansk together with her baby.
