Hungary is supporting an initiative by eight European Union leaders to start membership talks with Ukraine, Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has said.

That's according to Reuters, Ukrinform reports.

"Hungary backs this initiative [on Ukraine's accession to the EU] and we urge Brussels to put the issue on the agenda," Szijjarto said.

According to him, the Hungarian people want peace. "We are doing all we can to ensure that peace is restored as soon as possible," Szijjarto said.

He also expressed solidarity with Ukraine.

Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed an application for Ukraine's membership in the European Union.

After that, the presidents of Poland, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia, and Slovenia called for Ukraine's accession to the EU as soon as possible.
