Ukrainian consul to visit political prisoner Sushchenko on August 10

Ukrainian consul in Moscow Hennady Breskalenko will visit Ukrinform journalist Roman Sushchenko, who was illegally sentenced in the Russian Federation, at Lefortovo detention centre on Friday, August 10.

"Ukrainian consul in Moscow Hennady Breskalenko will visit Sushchenko on August 10. It is the last permit to consul’s visit issued by the Moscow City Court. Later on, such permits will be issued by the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation, which is a lot more difficult procedure," said Mark Feygin, the public defender of Roman Sushchenko.

As reported, Ukrinform correspondent in France Roman Sushchenko was illegally detained on September 30, 2016 in Moscow, where he arrived on a private trip.

On October 7, 2016, he was charged with "espionage." Russia's FSB claimed that Sushchenko is a member of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry. The latter denied this allegation.

On June 4, 2018, the Moscow City Court sentenced Sushchenko to 12 years in a high-security penal colony.
