Wife of journalist Roman Sushchenko in Brussels calls on the world to help liberate political prisoners of Kremlin

The struggle for the liberation of the Ukrainian political prisoners is an important mission not only for our people but for the whole Europe.

The wife of Ukrinform journalist Roman Sushchenko, Anzhelika Sushchenko, said this in her speech at the high-level forum of the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) in Brussels on Tuesday, an Ukrinform correspondent reported from Brussels.

"The struggle for the liberation of the Ukrainian political prisoners is an important mission not only for our people but for the whole of civilized Europe, where the values of freedom and human rights are more important than political conjuncture. The struggle for one prisoner is the struggle for the rights and dignity of all Europeans," the wife of Roman Sushchenko said.

Sushchenko noted that "right now, thousands of patriots in the trenches of Donbas defend the sovereignty of Ukraine from barbaric aggression." Hundreds of them were captured, and dozens became political hostages of the Kremlin, the wife of Roman Sushchenko said.

She recalled that for her husband, the Ukrainian journalist, "a small Stalin prison of Lefortovo has become his home for a long time."

"The war has come to our family like to every family in Ukraine to give us a lesson on the high price for freedom and independence," she said.

She expressed gratitude for the support provided by President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, the representatives of the Ukrainian government, the friends of Ukraine around the world, the European Union, the European Parliament, the members of the EU legislative institution, the Council of Europe, NATO, many governments and non-governmental organizations.

"I also want to express my gratitude to Brigitte Macron, the first lady of France, and I am grateful for the response to my letter of assistance and support," Sushchenko said.

She also thanked French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, as well as Russian lawyer, defender of Ukrainian political prisoners Mark Feygin.
