Ukraine calls for international community to help release Roman Sushchenko

During a meeting of the Fourth Committee of the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, the Ukrainian delegation to the United Nations has called on the international community to respond to illegal arrest of journalist Roman Sushchenko and assist in his immediate release, own Ukrinform correspondent reports.

“One of the recent examples of the Russian cynical campaign against independent mass media was the unjustified detention of Ukrainian citizen journalist Roman Sushchenko, who was arrested in Moscow on September 30, 2016 on baseless charges,” said speaker of Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the UN Oleh Nikolenko

Roman Sushchenko "is steadfast and independent defender of freedom of speech, known for his publications about illegal actions of Russia against Ukraine." Numerous articles and reports by the Ukrainian journalist are freely available, the diplomat said.

"We call on the international community to respond to this unacceptable case of persecution of the Ukrainian journalist in Russia and use all available tools to facilitate his immediate release," the representative of Ukraine said.

Fourth Committee of the UN General Assembly deals with special political issues. On Tuesday, the committee’s meeting was dedicated to the issues of media and information.

As reported, Ukrainian citizen, own Ukrinform correspondent in France, Roman Sushchenko was detained in Moscow on 30 September 2016, where he arrived on a private visit.
