Lomachenko vs Lopez 2020 Upset of the Year

American Teofimo Lopez's victory over Ukrainian Vasyl Lomachenko has been recognized as the 2020 Upset of the Year according to The Ring Magazine.

"Lopez, who at just 23 had nowhere near the experience of his vastly more accomplished opponent, wasn't supposed to win, and he did. That's the definition of an upset. Because of all this — Lopez's coming-out-party against the heavily favored Lomachenko is The Ring Magazine 2020 Upset of the Year. […] No other outcome in 2020 came close to matching the shock value," the report reads.

Lopez was announced the winner by scores of 116-112, 119-109, 117-111. Lomachenko lost his WBA, WBC Franchise and WBO lightweight titles. This was the second defeat for the Ukrainian boxer in his professional career.

Lomachenko underwent shoulder surgery after the fight with Lopez. Lomachenko's team said he planned to hold his next bout in March or April 2021.
