Svitolina reaches Rogers Cup semifinals

Ukraine’s No.1 and world No.5 Elina Svitolina continues to defend her Rogers Cup champion title.

“Svitolina overcame a first-set deficit to slide past No.14 seed Elise Mertens of Belgium, 7-5, 6-3, in their quarterfinal showdown, and move into the semifinals in Canada for the second straight year. No.5-seeded Svitolina fell behind 0-4 in the opening set before she was able to recover and claim the straight-set victory in one hour and 25 minutes,” WTA reports.

Now Svitolina will face No.3 seed and reigning US Open champion Sloane Stephens, who dispatched Anastasija Sevastova, 6-2, 6-2, in the quarterfinals earlier on Friday.
