Sub-zero temperatures to return to Ukraine after warming, forecaster says
This week, Ukraine will see a slight rise in temperatures, but closer to the weekend, some regions will experience a noticeable drop in temperatures.
This was announced on television by Ivan Semylit, a forecaster at the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, according to Ukrinform.
He explained that currently, the weather situation in Ukraine is determined by two baric systems, one of which is atmospheric fronts coming from a cyclone in the southwest, causing precipitation. In addition, in some regions—eastern, Sumy, Poltava, Dnipropetrovsk, and Zaporizhzhia—the weather without precipitation is caused by high-pressure isobars.
"This situation will change in the future. We see atmospheric fronts continuing to arrive. Tomorrow, we expect light wet snow and rain in the western, northern, and central regions. This combination of weather conditions is caused by the fact that atmospheric fronts will continue to move, and warmer air masses from southern latitudes will enter our country. Because of this, we expect a slight increase in temperature, in particular, tonight within the range of 0-5 degrees below zero," Semylit said.
The forecaster said that on the left bank, due to the fact that this territory is still influenced by an anticyclone, it will be slightly cooler – down to -8.
“During the day, we expect temperatures ranging from -2 to +3 degrees across Ukraine. In southern Ukraine, it will be around 0 degrees tomorrow night, while daytime highs will reach +4...+9 degrees. This is due to the fact that air masses from the south will be coming our way, bringing moisture and warmth,” he said.
Semylit noted that ice and sleet will continue in Ukraine, and fog will form across the country tonight and on Wednesday morning, so people should be careful and cautious.
The forecaster said that fog will form in the western and northern regions in some places, but it will also affect visibility.
"Looking at how the weather situation will develop, we expect a cyclone from the Black Sea to form in the southwestern direction, which will draw in air masses coming from the north. In other words, cooler air masses from northern latitudes will continue to flow in," he said.
As Semylit noted, a significant drop in temperature is expected on January 30 and 31 in the western, northern, Vinnytsia, and Cherkasy regions.
"On January 30, at night and during the day, we expect temperatures from -1 to -6 degrees, with a drop to -10 in some places. In Zakarpattia, due to the fact that the mountains there will create a certain barrier, it will be around 0 degrees. On the night of January 31, we expect even lower temperatures, ranging from -7 to -13 degrees Celsius. During the day, temperatures will range from -5 to -10 degrees Celsius. In Zakarpattia, temperatures will range from -2 to -7 degrees Celsius," said the meteorologist.
He said that in the southern part of Ukraine, significantly warmer temperatures are expected during [this] day, which will be within 1-6 degrees Celsius.
“On January 30, we expect up to +9 during the day. In the rest of the territory, temperatures will range from 4 degrees below zero to 3 degrees above zero during the day,” Semylit said.
As reported by Ukrinform, earlier, Ukrhydrometcenter spokeswoman Nataliia Ptukha noted that January will be colder than the climatic norm.
