Ukrainian citizens still held captive in Syria – intelligence

Andriy Yusov, a representative of the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, has stated that a certain number of Ukrainians, mostly women and children, are still held captive in Syria.

"This is planned work, this is work that has yet to be finished. Because there are still a certain number of Ukrainians in those camps. We are talking mostly about women and children. And this work still needs to be finished," Yusov said during the national news telethon, commenting on the recent release from captivity and evacuation of Ukrainian citizens from Syria.

He emphasized that "the work is difficult because we are talking about the territory of Syria, where internal conflicts continue, where different territories are controlled by different formations, different groups."

"Often these borders are not recognized by anyone. Therefore, it is really a difficult diplomatic, political, and security work and operation. This is not the first time Ukrainians take their fellow citizens out of Syria. And of course, this mission has to be finished and it will definitely be in the near future," Yusov emphasized.

As reported, officers of the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense conducted an operation to free two women and six children from captivity in Syria and evacuate them home.
