Minister Liashko: Pandemic has proved need for pharmaceutical independence

The state is interested in developing long-term and systematic cooperation with domestic pharmaceutical companies.

“The development of national pharmaceutical production is one of the goals of the National Economic Strategy until 2030, which the Government approved in March 2021. Pharmaceutical independence is now more important than ever as the COVID-19 pandemic has once again proved that each country meets its needs as a priority in case of emergency,” Minister of Health of Ukraine Viktor Liashko posted on Facebook following his visit to Farmak pharmaceutical company on January 4, Ukrinform reports.

He noted that Farmak-made medicines, including insulin, are being actively reimbursed within the Affordable Medicines government program. In total, the company produces more than 200 types of medicines, the quality of which corresponds to the European level.

“The company constantly evolves, invests in new production, and builds a new innovation center," the minister stressed.

According to him, the localization of pharmaceutical production, the launch of domestic production of immunobiological medicinal products, including vaccines on schedule, are among the potential areas of cooperation between the state and business.

As reported, in August 2021, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced that a biocluster "Biosafety and Development of Biotechnologies" would be established in Ukraine to produce vaccines and infectious disease diagnostic solutions.
