Recognition of Holodomor as genocide: Stefanchuk initiates appeal to speakers of world's parliaments

Verkhovna Rada Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk initiates an appeal to the speakers of the parliaments around the world with a request to recognize the Holodomor as the genocide of the Ukrainian people.

"Next year we will mark the 90th anniversary of the Holodomor. In this regard, I personally ... in January next year will appeal to the speakers of the parliaments around the world to recognize the Holodomor as the genocide of the Ukrainian people. And your support and the correct presentation of this initiative, taking into account the specifics of each state, is crucial to its success," Stefanchuk told diplomats at the conference "Diplomacy 30. Strategy of Strong State", an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

The Verkhovna Rada Speaker called on the Ukrainian ambassadors to facilitate the adoption of relevant decisions by governments and parliaments of the world countries.

"I urge, especially the ambassadors to countries that have not yet recognized this terrible crime of the Soviet communist regime, to make additional efforts to persuade the parliamentarians of these countries to take appropriate decisions," he said.

The Holodomor of 1932-1933 is the act of genocide against the Ukrainian people organized by the leadership of the Communist Party and the Government of the USSR by creating an artificial mass famine.

The Day of Remembrance of Holodomor Victims is marked annually on the fourth Saturday in November.
