NSDC predicts Omicron variant could be found in Ukraine this week

The Omicron variant of COVID-19 could be reported in Ukraine this week, but the epidemic situation will be stable on holidays.

Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Oleksiy Danilov said this at a meeting chaired by President Volodymyr Zelensky, the press service of the head of state reported.

"According to NSDC projections, the epidemic situation in our country should be stable during the holidays. It is expected that the new variant of coronavirus, Omicron, may appear in Ukraine this week. But the results of the first studies in countries where it has already been found show the symptoms of the illness are milder," the press service quoted Danilov as saying.

At the same time, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said that in connection with the upcoming Christmas and New Year holidays, the Ministry of Health and the chief state sanitary doctor have issued respective orders on anti-epidemic measures to be taken at ski resorts. A separate decision has been made on anti-epidemic measures to be taken during mass events.

The Omicron variant of COVID-19 has already been reported in about 60 countries.
