Squid Game sequel can be filmed in Ukraine, culture minister believes

After watching the Squid Game series, Minister of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine Oleksandr Tkachenko stated that the sequel could be filmed in Ukraine.

The minister believes that the series should be filmed in Ukraine for several reasons.

“Getting cash rebates. It is always profitable and foreign producers are well aware of this. Locations. Ukraine has unique landscapes. Seas, rivers, lakes, forests, mountains, steppes, islands, deserts. And all this at a distance of several hours from each other. Professional productions that are comfortable to work with. High-quality filming equipment so there is no need to take it from abroad, increasing the series costs. Human capital – actors, directors, screenwriters, camera crew, designers, and everyone involved in the filming process. Accommodation and equipment rental prices are lower than in Europe or Asia,” Tkachenko posted on Telegram.

Tkachenko noted that the Squid Game was ranked first in more than 80 countries, including the United States. The series also broke viewership records among non-English series, although the project was conceived to expand the platform’s geography and attract subscribers primarily from Asia.

The Minister of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine reminded that he had a recent conversation with Netflix representatives to strengthen cooperation. According to him, the Ministry is now in close contact at the negotiation stage.

"Ukrainian movies are likely to reach new heights by appearing on the platform soon," Tkachenko wrote.

As reported, Netflix streaming platform now has a Ukrainian interface and the website’s Ukrainian version netflix.ua.

In September 2020, Ukrainian studios Postmodern Postproduction and Tak Treba Production became official partners of Netflix.
