British COVID-19 variant recorded in 21 regions of Ukraine

An increase in the number of COVID-19 cases and growth of lethal cases in Ukraine is associated with the circulation of new strains of the disease, according to Director General of the Public Health Center Roman Rodyna.

“The rise in the relative number of cases, increased severity of the disease and mortality rate in 2021 is associated with the circulation of new variants of SARS-CoV-2," Rodyna said at a press conference, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

According to him, the circulation of a UK variant was recorded in 21 regions. In addition, a South African variant was registered in Poltava region. To identify strains, the Public Health Center cooperates the World Health Organization’s laboratories and institutions that have started sequencing in Ukraine.

As reported, Ukraine recorded 16,427 new coronavirus cases on April 14.
