Tourism and film revenues drop by 50% due to pandemic – Tkachenko

Revenues in the tourism and film distribution sectors fell by at least 50% due to the coronavirus pandemic, Minister of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine Oleksandr Tkachenko has said.

“The coronavirus has primarily hit the creative industries. On different scales, but there are areas that are under total pressure. For example, revenues in tourism and film distribution have fallen by at least 50%. Book publishers and audiovisual services feel uncomfortable as well," Tkachenko said during the All-Ukrainian Forum “Ukraine 30. Culture. Media. Tourism” on March 11, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

He noted that in general, creative industries are not so much about spending money as about generating new funds. According to him, creative industries include visual arts, performing arts, auditory arts, audiovisual arts, literature, publishing industry, print media, design, fashion, architecture and urbanism, advertising, libraries, archives and museums, folk arts and crafts, new media outlets, and information and communication technologies.

"Creative industries are a field that is directed towards the future. It is rather difficult to imagine the future of this country without creative industries. In addition, this industry is developing faster than all other industries, relying primarily not on resources, land, or oil, but on people and their creativity," Tkachenko added.

As Ukrinform reported, Ukraine will work on the creation and promotion of the concepts of cultural routes in a joint cultural space with Europe.
