Ukraine reports 8,997 new COVID-19 cases

A total of 8,997 new coronavirus cases have been recorded in Ukraine in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases to 1,099,493.

"Some 8,997 new cases of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) have been recorded in Ukraine as of January 7, 2021. In particular, those who have fallen ill include 227 children and 385 health workers," Health Minister Maksym Stepanov posted on Facebook.

He said that 148 deaths, 11,316 recoveries and 2,567 hospitalizations were recorded in Ukraine on January 6.

Stepanov noted that 54,438 coronavirus tests, including 37,287 PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests and 17,151 ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) tests, had been performed in Ukraine in the past 24 hours.

Since the beginning of pandemic in Ukraine, 19,505 deaths and 773,214 recoveries have been recorded and 5,717,403 PCR tests have been performed.

The highest number of confirmed COVID-19 cases over the past day was registered in Kyiv city (731), Odesa region (694), Kharkiv region (599), Donetsk region (572) and Zaporizhzhia region (509).
