Protection of state language crucial for Ukraine’s security – Kremin

Protection of the state language is a matter of Ukraine’s national security, Commissioner for the Protection of the Ukrainian Language Taras Kremin has said.

“For a year and a half of the existence of the Law of Ukraine “On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as the State Language”, there have been many attacks on this law from both individual MPs and political forces. For a long time it has been under consideration at the Constitutional Court of Ukraine. The likelihood of abolishing the language law remains one the greatest threats on the country's agenda. Therefore, the protection of the state language is a matter of national security," Kremin wrote on his Facebook page.

He recalled that the Constitution of Ukraine defined the Ukrainian language as the state language back in 1996.

On April 25, 2019, the Verkhovna Rada adopted the Law of Ukraine “On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as the State Language”. The articles of the law are being implemented in stages. The vast majority of its rules came into force on July 16, 2019.
