Council of Europe records three cases of threats against Ukrainian journalists in August

The Council of Europe's platform to promote the protection of journalism and safety of journalists recorded three reports of threats against media representatives in Ukraine in August, according to the platform's website.

According to the report, among such cases is the burning on August 17 of a car used by the Schemes investigative program. The platform assessed the case as intimidation of journalists. The Ukrainian authorities have not yet replied to this situation.

The platform also reported that on August 8, Ukrainian investigative journalist Mykhailo Tkach found signs of a surveillance device being hidden in his apartment.

Finally, the Council of Europe recorded an attempt in a Ukrainian court to gain illegal access to the telephone of a media representative. This fact was added to the platform on August 4.

In 2020, the platform registered 128 cases of threats to the safety of journalists in 29 countries. Some 112 journalists are in detention, and one journalist was killed.
