Ukrainians mark Europe Day

On Saturday, May 16, Ukrainians celebrate Europe Day.

After gaining independence, Ukraine took a strategic course towards European integration and expressed its intention to join the European Union as soon as possible.

Europe Day has been celebrated in Ukraine on the third Saturday of May since 2003 in accordance with the Presidential Decree "On Europe Day".

Ukraine is the only non-EU member state that celebrates Europe Day at the state level. In EU, Europe Day is held every May 9 to mark the anniversary of the speech by French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman that led to the foundation of the European Union.

This year, in the context of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, Europe Day celebrations are held online.

President Volodymyr Zelensky congratulates everyone on this day and says that the time will come when Ukraine will become a full-fledged member of the European family.
