Report on human rights abuses in occupied Crimea presented in The Hague

 The report on human rights abuses in the context of imposition of Russian citizenship in occupied Crimea was presented in The Hague.

An expert meeting was held at the Embassy of Ukraine in the Netherlands, an Ukrinform correspondent in The Hague reports.

The report was prepared by experts of the Open Society Justice Initiative. In particular, it deals with the legal consequences of imposition of citizenship, discrimination against Crimean Tatars and Ukrainians in Crimea.

Ambassador of Ukraine to the Netherlands Vsevolod Chentsov stressed that some violations were really striking, in particular, the persons convicted under Ukrainian law had become automatically convicted in Russia.

The meeting participants discussed violence, deprivation of liberty, disappearance of people and ill-treatment in the territory of the annexed Crimea, in particular drawing on the example of Kolchenko and Sentsov.

The issuance of passports to persons living in temporarily occupied territories of eastern Ukraine as a distinctive element of the occupation of the region with the use of the citizenship institute, which contradicts the Minsk agreements, was also discussed. Considerable attention was paid to the adoption of Ukrainian children, as well as the issue of imposition of citizenship as part of a project of "cultural erasure and blurring Ukrainian identity."
