Sushchenko in Warsaw to attend events marking Day of Dignity and Freedom

Ukrinform correspondent Roman Sushchenko, a former Kremlin political prisoner, will be on an official visit to Warsaw on November 25-26, where he will take part in the events dedicated to the Day of Dignity and Freedom.

The journalist will be in Warsaw at the invitation of the Embassy of Ukraine in Poland and the Polish Journalists Association (SDP), own Ukrinform correspondent has reported.

During his visit, meetings with Sushchenko are planned to be held in the building of the Polish Journalists Association and the Ukrainian House.

As expected, Roman Sushchenko will meet with some Polish politicians. The events with the participation of the journalist will be also held at the Embassy of Ukraine, where an exhibition of his drawings, which has been opened several months ago on the facade of the Embassy, will be solemnly closed.

As reported, Roman Sushchenko was detained in violation of international rules on September 30, 2016 in Moscow, where he arrived on a private trip from Paris. On October 7, 2016, he was charged with espionage.

On June 4, 2018, the Moscow City Court sentenced Sushchenko to 12 years in a high-security penal colony. On September 12, the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation called this decision legal.

On September 7, 2019, Russia and Ukraine exchanged detainees in the 35-for-35 format. Eleven Ukrainians illegally convicted in Russia, including Oleg Sentsov, Roman Sushchenko, Oleksandr Kolchenko, Pavlo Hryb and others, and 24 sailors detained near the Kerch Strait in late November 2018 returned to Ukraine.
