UN: 319 prisoners already transferred from ‘LPR’ to Ukraine

As of August 15, a total of 319 pre-conflict prisoners have been transferred from the “Luhansk People’s Republic” to the government-controlled territory of Ukraine.

Head of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine Matilda Bogner stated this while presenting a report on the human rights situation in Ukraine between May 16 and August 15, 2019, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

“As of 15 August 2019, a total of 319 pre-conflict prisoners (including 11 women) have been transferred from territory controlled by ‘Luhansk people’s republic’ to Government-controlled territory,” Bogner said.

She reminded that 54 pre-conflict prisoners were transferred from the territory controlled by the self-proclaimed “Luhansk People's Republic” on September 12.

"We also hope that this practice will be renewed in the territory controlled by the self-proclaimed ‘Donetsk People's Republic’," Bogner added.

She noted that the UN Monitoring Mission had documented horrific conditions of detention and forced labor in correctional facilities in the self-proclaimed “Luhansk People's Republic.” “Some of those who refused to work were punished and placed in solitary confinement cells. Others were forced to sign the statements that they were willing to work for free,” the head of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine said.
