Ukrainian scientists to explore Antarctica from outer space

Ukraine plans to create a map of Antarctica based on space images in spatial-temporal dynamics.

This is envisaged in a memorandum signed between the National Antarctic Scientific Center (NASC) of the Ukrainian Education and Science Ministry and EOS Data Analytics, Inc., an international company that makes a comprehensive analysis of data from space systems, the ministry's press service reported.

"At the Academician Vernadsky station, we are already exploring the ocean in partnership with business. We lacked only a glance from above, from where it is possible to monitor processes of a large spatial scale. Now, thanks to the EOS, we have managed to see Antarctica from space simultaneously. Therefore, our understanding of Antarctica and the planet Earth in general will become much deeper and fuller. I am very glad that such high-tech modern companies are born and are operating in Ukraine, and the future of the country depends precisely on them," Acting Director of the NASC Yevhen Dykyi said.

The project will include monitoring of the Antarctic ice cover, the "flowering" of the sea, the spread of vegetation on the continent, etc. The signed memorandum is an example of the first public-private partnership in Ukraine to explore the Earth from outer space.

It is expected that the first results of cooperation will already be seen in March this year.

Earlier, the NASC's competition commission determined the main composition of the 24th Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition.
