Residents of eastern Ukraine tired of war – research

The negative attitude towards the military solution to the conflict in the region has increased among the residents of eastern Ukraine.

“The negative attitude towards the military way of settlement of the conflict situation in eastern Ukraine has increased,” UN Peace and Development Advisor Stan Veitsman announced at the presentation of the results of the UN Social Cohesion and Reconciliation Index for Eastern Ukraine (USE) 2018, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

This index was around 1.7 in 2017 and has decreased to 1.3 in 2018, the study shows. “Therefore, when we talk about a peaceful way to settle and stabilize this situation, we can say that the population is tired of the military hostilities and their negative attitude towards the further use of military means of resolving a conflict situation strengthens,” Veitsman noted.

The UN Social Cohesion and Reconciliation Index for Eastern Ukraine (USE) is an annual study designed to improve the understanding of social dynamics in the government-controlled areas in Donetsk and Luhansk regions as well as in Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kharkiv regions.
