NABU joins checks on candidates for Anti-Corruption Court judges

The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) has joined checks on candidates for judges of the High Anti-Corruption Court (HACC).

NABU Director Artem Sytnyk told this to journalists at a conference devoted to International Anti-Corruption Day.

"We have experience of cooperation with the HQCJ [High Qualification Commission of Judges] and the Public Integrity Council during the competition to the Supreme Court. We provided materials to the commission and the PIC. According to the same scheme, we want to work on the High Anti-Corruption Court, that is, we send materials to the commission and also work with the Council of International Experts," he said.

Sytnyk added that he had met with members of the Public Council of International Experts who are responsible for the selection of judges to the High Anti-Corruption Court and agreed on close cooperation "so as to minimize the risks of dishonest candidates coming to this court."

The NABU director expressed hope that civil society representatives would also be involved in the selection of candidates for HACC judges, as was the case during the competition to the Supreme Court.

On July 17, 2018, the High Qualification Commission of Judges of Ukraine began the process of selecting members of the Public Council of International Experts as part of preparations for the contest to the High Anti-Corruption Court. It will consist of six members nominated by the High Qualification Commission of Judges of Ukraine solely on the basis of proposals from international organizations with which Ukraine cooperates in the field of preventing and combatting corruption in accordance with international treaties of Ukraine.
