Ukrainians of Bratislava join action ‘Light a candle of remembrance!’ Photos

Ukrainians, who live in the capital of Slovakia, held a series of events within the framework of the international action “Light a candle of remembrance!” dedicated to the 85th anniversary of the Holodomor of 1932-33 in Ukraine.

"On October 31, at the monument to Taras Shevchenko in Bratislava, the staff of the Embassy of Ukraine in the Slovak Republic, the members of the Slovak-Ukrainian Society of Bratislava and the Shevchenko musical and drama ensemble, the students of a Ukrainian school in Bratislava, representatives of the creative intellectuals and Ukrainian community conducted the commemorative events within the framework of the international action ‘Light a candle of remembrance!” the Embassy of Ukraine in Slovakia reports.

In particular, Ambassador of Ukraine to Slovakia Yuriy Mushka emphasized that "the Holodomor was one of the biggest national catastrophes in modern Ukrainian history. We regard it as the most brutal crime of the communist regime against the Ukrainian people."

The students of the Ukrainian school of Bratislava read out the names of children from Kirovohrad region, who had been starved to death in 1932-1933.

The participants in the action honored the memory of the Holodomor victims by observing a minute's silence.

The global action "Light a candle of remembrance!" started on September 1. It is held daily by the embassies and general consulates of Ukraine in different countries of the world, will last for 85 days and end in Kyiv on November 24. During each action, 85 names of children from millions of those starved to death are read out.
