On October 23, the events within the framework of the action “Light a candle of remembrance”, dedicated to the 85th anniversary of the Holodomor of 1932-33 in Ukraine, were held in Cape Town, South Africa.

According to the press service of the Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of South Africa, the events were held at the Cape Town Holocaust Centre.

"The action started with a lecture of Harvard University researcher Nadiya Kravets ‘Death by Starvation: Geography and Legacy of Stalin's Terror-Famine of 1932-1933 in Ukraine’ that presented the latest findings of the University’s research group. The researchers use geographic data as a tool for studying demographic, political, environmental and economic phenomena, including collectivization and land reform as the causes of artificial famine," the statement reads.

The exhibition "PEOPLE OF THE TRUTH" was also opened within the framework of the action. It was prepared by the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance and tells about the Holodomor of 1932-1933 in Ukraine based on firsthand testimony.

During the event, the memoirs of the relatives of Ukrainians, members of the Ukrainian Association of South Africa, who survived the Stalin’s terror-famine, were read out.

The action to commemorate Holodomor victims was organized by the Ukrainian Association of South Africa and the Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of South Africa.

On September 1, 85 days before the Holodomor remembrance day, Ukraine and the world began to honor the victims who died during the genocide of 1932-1933.
