Ukrainian communities in United States join international action to commemorate Holodomor victims

Ukrainian communities in Illinois, Michigan and Kansas joined the international action “Light a candle of remembrance” dedicated to the 85th anniversary of the Holodomor of 1932-33 in Ukraine.

"On September 1, 2018, the international action ‘Light a candle of remembrance’ was launched to commemorate children of Holodomor. On September 16, Ukrainian communities of Illinois, Michigan and Kansas joined the action," the Consulate General of Ukraine in Chicago posted on Facebook.

As the consulate noted, the events commemorating the 85th anniversary of Holodomor started in Chicago with the memorial service performed by Patriarch of Kyiv and All Rus-Ukraine Filaret and representatives of Ukrainian clergy in the United States.

In addition, the memorial service was held at the St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Bloomingdale, where the monument to the victims of Holodomor-Genocide in Ukraine of 1932-1933 is located.

On September 1, 85 days before the Holodomor remembrance day, Ukraine and the world began to honor the victims who died during the genocide of 1932-1933.
