Poroshenko signs law on legal status of missing persons

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has signed the law on the legal status of missing persons.

As the press service of the Head of State notes, the document defines the legal status of missing persons and provides legal grounds for defining the status, registering, searching and granting social protection to such persons and their relatives.

The law also provides for the creation of the unified register of missing persons - an electronic database that will contain information about missing persons, unidentified remains and court rulings on related to missing persons.

"The implementation of the law will allow to regulate the legal status of missing persons, to provide such persons and their relatives with proper legal protection and to bring the search for them in accordance with the international humanitarian law, international human rights law and recommendations of the Council of Europe," the statement reads.

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine passed the law on the legal status of missing persons on July 12.
