Twelve Ukrainian sailors from ship detained in Greece returning home

Twelve Ukrainian sailors - crewmembers of the Mekong Spirit, a container carrier detained by Greek border guards in May 2017 on suspicion of smuggling weapons - are returning from Athens to Odesa, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin has said on Twitter.

"The subject of Ukrainian sailors in Greece is sensitive and difficult, but the solution is predictable. Today 12 sailors from the Mekong Spirit, who were on board for 14 months, are returning from Athens to Odesa," he wrote.

According to Klimkin, consuls are working for the speedy return of all Ukrainian sailors home.

As Ukrinform reported, the Mekong Spirit, a vessel owned by a Swiss company, was detained by the Greek police on May 25, 2017 on suspicion of transporting military goods. The crewmembers are 17 citizens of Ukraine, including the captain.
