U.S. Embassy in Ukraine calls for Sentsov release

The Embassy of the United States in Ukraine joins people around the world in calling for the release of Ukrainian political prisoner Oleg Sentsov, who is illegally held by Russia.

The embassy posted a relevant statement on Twitter.

“We join people around the world in calling for the immediate release of Ukrainian political prisoners unjustly held by Russia, including Oleg Sentsov, who just entered the second month of his hunger strike,” reads the statement.

On July 14, the third stage of #SaveOlegSentsov global action begins, which is held under the slogan “At the FIFA World Cup in Russia we are playing for political prisoners”. Everybody can join the global action in social networks.

As reported, Ukrainian film director and political prisoner Oleg Sentsov, sentenced by a Russian court to 20 years of imprisonment in a high-security penal colony on trumped-up charges of plotting terrorist acts in annexed Crimea, went on a hunger strike on May 14, demanding the release of all Ukrainian political prisoners held by Russia.

In general, 64 Ukrainian political prisoners are illegally kept in Russia and annexed Crimea, including Ukrinform journalist Roman Sushchenko, who in Russia was sentenced to 12 years in a high-security penal colony on "espionage" charges.
