Government creates special commission on population census

The Cabinet of Ministers has supported a draft resolution to create an interdepartmental commission on the all-Ukrainian population census.

The decision was approved at a government meeting on April 18, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

First Deputy Prime Minister - Minister for Economic Development and Trade Stepan Kubiv noted that the last census of population in Ukraine was carried out in 2001, and currently it is "an extremely urgent issue".

"On December 5, 2001, the first all-Ukrainian census was held ... And then the decision [on the next census] was postponed to 2013, and then to 2016 and 2020," said Kubiv.

He explained that the creation of the interdepartmental commission would ensure the coordination of actions among government bodies involved in the census.

The last population census, and so far the only census held in independent Ukraine, was carried out on December 5, 2001. The total population recorded was 48.457 million persons.

The next all-Ukrainian population census is scheduled for 2020.
