Holodomor killed 3 million Ukrainians in half a year – demographic studies

In the first half of 1933, the excess mortality in Ukraine reached 3 million people.

Natalia Levchuk, the chief research fellow of the Ptukha Institute for Demography and Social Studies at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, said this during the press conference at the Ukrinform news agency.

"The 8.7 million excess deaths were registered in the USSR in 1932-1934. Ukraine suffered the largest human losses in absolute terms. According to our estimates, 3.9 million died, mainly peasants. Another factor which is typical of the then Ukraine and is paid little attention to is an extremely high concentration of deaths within a relatively short period of time. 3 million excessive deaths out of a total number of 3.9 million fall within the period from January to July 1933. This means that the excess mortality reached 3 million in Ukraine during the first 7 months of 1933," Natalia Levchuk noted.

The Holodomor was a man-made famine in Soviet Ukraine in 1932 and 1933 that killed an officially estimated 7 million to 10 million people. It was part of the wider Soviet famine of 1932–33, which affected the major grain-producing areas of the country
