Almost 70% of Ukrainians engaged in self-treatment due to lack of funds - minister

The existing health care model in Ukraine has led to the fact that almost 70% of Ukrainians are engaged in self-treatment due to lack of funds, Health Minister Ulana Suprun has reported on her Facebook page.

"Free medicine in Ukraine is a long-term lie, because all pay in hospitals, and they pay a lot. Every other Ukrainian is not able to pay the cost of 'free' treatment, so he refuses or postpones it. As a result, 69% of Ukrainians are engaged in self-treatment due to lack of funds," she wrote.

Suprun recalled that now the Verkhovna Rada was considering bills Nos. 6327 and 6604, which foresee a change in the financing of the health care system and the creation of guarantees of medical care for the population. In particular, it is envisaged that the state will pay for medical services provided to each individual patient. The provision of primary, emergency and palliative care will be fully paid from the budget. Specialized and highly specialized assistance will be covered under a health guarantee program.
