THIS DAY IN HISTORY: What happened on September 6, 1891

First Ukrainian immigrants Vasyl Eleniak (Wasyl Eleniak) and Ivan Pylypiv (Iwan Pylypiw) arrived in Canada. Born in the village of Nebyliv (now: Rozhniativ district, Ivano-Frankivsk region), they on September 6 (according to other data - September 7), 1891, arrived in the country of the Maple leaf on the steamship Oregon. 

Over the next five waves of emigration, the Ukrainian-Canadian community reached almost 1.3 million people and become influential, having received representation in all government bodies. To celebrate the contribution of Ukrainians to the formation of modern Canada, September 7 was designated as Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Day in the provinces of Ontario and Alberta.
