Ukraine marks 25th anniversary of independence

The Independence Day is marked annually on August 24 in the honor of adoption of the Act of Independence of Ukraine by the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian SSR in 1991.

This event was preceded by the adoption of the Declaration on the State Sovereignty of Ukraine, which proclaimed the independence, integrity and indivisibility of the Ukrainian State within its territory and the independence and equality in the external relations, by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on July 16, 1990.

The extraordinary session of the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian SSR started its work in Kyiv on August 24, 1991. In the evening of August 24, the Act of the Independence of Ukraine was adopted. This meant that the Ukrainian state has its indivisible and inviolable territory, where only the Constitution and the laws of Ukraine are effective.

Having endorsed the Act of the Independence of Ukraine at the nationwide referendum, Ukrainian people enacted the document and started a new stage of the Ukrainian history.
