Macron to discuss support for Ukraine with Magyar
Further support for Ukraine following the unblocking of a European loan will be one of the central topics of talks between French President Emmanuel Macron and Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar.
Macron made the statement ahead of his meeting with Magyar at the Élysée Palace, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.
“Support for Ukraine will, of course, be at the center of our discussion – following the recent unblocking of a €90 billion loan for Ukraine and the adoption of the 20th sanctions package against Russia,” the French President said.
He thanked the Hungarian Prime Minister for his “clarity, spirit of cooperation, and engagement,” and stressed that Europe must continue to increase pressure on Russia.
“We must continue to pressure Russia’s war machine and fight sanctions evasion and the shadow fleet,” Macron said.
According to Macron, the meeting will also address negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU.
“We will also discuss the resumption of a normal negotiation process on Ukraine’s EU accession – in line with the principle of merit-based progress,” he said.
The French President added that these issues would also be central to the upcoming European Council meeting on June 18–19.
As previously reported by Ukrinform, Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar is visiting France on June 3.
