Leader of Germany’s Green Party urges Berlin to provide Ukraine with more air defense systems, Taurus missiles

Franziska Brantner, head of Germany’s opposition party Alliance 90/The Greens, has called on the federal government to provide Ukraine with additional air defense systems and long-range missiles.

Ukrinform reports this citing an interview Brantner gave to German news agency DPA.

“Kiev has a right to call for additional support in air defenses, and the German government should look with its European partners into how more could be provided,” Brantner said.

She emphasized that Russian President Vladimir Putin “does not want peace – he wants subjugation,” and accused him of committing war crimes by attacking Ukraine’s energy and heating infrastructure.

The Green Party leader also advocated supplying Ukraine with German Taurus cruise missiles, which have a range of over 500 km, calling it “an important signal of political support.”

Brantner noted that when in opposition, Chancellor Friedrich Merz backed supplying the weapons, but has held back from openly doing so since taking office in May last year.

Additionally, the Greens leader called for action against Russia’s “shadow fleet” and for renewed attempt to free up Russian assets frozen in EU banks.

Earlier, CDU Bundestag member Roderich Kiesewetter stated that Germany and Europe must increase support for Ukraine, including beginning training of Ukrainian military to use Taurus missiles.
